PowerBar Isoactive Red Fruit 1320g container from my pickleball test

PowerBar Isoactive Review: My 12-Session Pickleball Test

I bought a 1320 g tub of PowerBar Isoactive Red Fruit on August 28, 2026 for €19.79, specifically to use during long, sweaty pickleball sessions. I paid for it myself and received no free product, discount or compensation.

After about 12 pickleball sessions, usually around three hours each and typically ranging from two to four hours, my short version is simple: I like it a lot. The Red Fruit flavor tastes surprisingly good, the powder dissolves completely in my shaker, and I find it more practical than trying to bring juice plus a separate electrolyte product.

I normally drink it during play alongside plain water. I feel a little clearer in the head and as if I have slightly more energy than when I only drink water, although that is my subjective experience rather than a controlled performance test.

PowerBar Isoactive Red Fruit — 4.6/5

Quick verdict: A very practical sports drink powder for my longer pickleball sessions. I like the flavor, it mixes exceptionally well, and one tub is inexpensive per serving.

Best for: pickleball players who regularly play for a couple of hours or more, especially if they sweat heavily and want carbohydrates and electrolytes in the same drink.

Skip if: you only play short sessions, prefer plain water, dislike sweet sports drinks, or want a zero-calorie electrolyte product.

What I liked
  • Red Fruit tastes surprisingly good — about 8/10 for me
  • Sweet without feeling excessively sweet
  • Powder dissolves completely in my shaker
  • No sediment like I often get with protein powder
  • No stomach problems or nausea in my use
  • Combines carbohydrates and five electrolytes in one drink
  • Good value at the €19.79 I paid
  • Still tastes fine when it warms up during a session
What could be better
  • A leak in my pickleball bag would be much messier than spilled water
  • I have not yet compared Red Fruit directly with the other Isoactive flavors
  • I have not compared it with another sports drink, so my rating is based on this product rather than a head-to-head test
  • Players wanting only electrolytes may prefer a lower-calorie or zero-calorie option

Bottom line

I rate PowerBar Isoactive Red Fruit 4.6/5. It has been easy to drink for two-to-four-hour pickleball sessions, tastes much better than I expected, mixes cleanly and offers good value. I would buy Isoactive again, although I may try another flavor next.

How I tested PowerBar Isoactive for pickleball

  • Purchased: August 28, 2026
  • Price paid: €19.79
  • Paid for personally: yes — no sponsorship, gift or discount code
  • Flavor and size: Red Fruit, 1320 g
  • Use so far: about 12 pickleball sessions
  • Typical session: around 3 hours
  • Usual range: roughly 2–4 hours
  • When I drink it: during pickleball
  • What I also drink: plain water
  • My usual mix: about 2 scoops in a roughly 650 ml shaker
  • Typical conditions: sessions where I sweat heavily and often feel hot
  • Other sports drinks compared directly: none so far

This is still an early-ownership review rather than a long-term one. Twelve sessions are enough for me to judge taste, mixability, stomach comfort and practical court use, but not enough to make sweeping claims about every athlete or long-term nutrition outcomes.

I normally use about two scoops in a roughly 650 ml shaker before heading onto court.

My mix is actually very close to PowerBar’s recommended concentration

PowerBar’s current preparation guidance says to mix 33 g of powder — approximately 1½ included scoops — with 500 ml of water.

If the scoop volume matches that label estimate, one scoop is roughly 22 g. That would put my two-scoop mix at about 44 g in 650 ml. The official mix is 6.6 g per 100 ml; mine works out to roughly 6.8 g per 100 ml.

So although I originally thought I was using noticeably more powder than recommended, my normal mix is actually only around 3% more concentrated than the official preparation. That is close enough that I would describe it as approximately the standard concentration rather than a strongly mixed drink.

What is in one standard serving?

PowerBar currently lists a standard 33 g serving mixed into 500 ml of water at 29 g of carbohydrate and 122 kcal. The five listed minerals are sodium, chloride, potassium, calcium and magnesium.

Per 33 g servingPowerBar’s current value
Carbohydrate29 g
Sugars20 g
Sodium355 mg
Chloride423 mg
Potassium150 mg
Calcium62.1 mg
Magnesium28.8 mg

I bought it because I wanted a convenient way to get both carbohydrate and electrolytes while playing for several hours and sweating heavily. Those nutrient amounts are manufacturer data, not measurements I independently verified.

Red Fruit tastes much better than I expected

I would give the flavor about 8/10. It is sweet — roughly 7/10 on my own scale — but I do not find it excessively sweet.

One reason this surprised me is that I am used to protein powder, and most protein powders I have used taste significantly worse. Isoactive feels much more like a normal flavored drink than a supplement I have to force down.

I usually start with tap water rather than pre-chilling the drink. My bottle keeps it somewhat cool, but even when it becomes warmer during a session, I still find Red Fruit pleasant enough to drink.

Mixability is excellent

This is probably the clearest technical win from my own use: the powder dissolves completely for me.

I use a protein shaker because its wide opening makes it easier to get the powder inside and shaking is simple. I have not noticed meaningful sediment at the bottom afterward. That is noticeably better than my experience with most protein powders, where some residue often remains.

How it feels during a 2–4 hour pickleball session

I usually drink Isoactive during play and drink plain water alongside it.

Subjectively, I feel a little clearer in the head and as if I have slightly more energy when I use it instead of relying only on water. I want to be careful with that statement: I have not run a controlled test, I cannot isolate carbohydrates from electrolytes from fluid intake, and this is not proof that another player will feel the same.

What I can say confidently is that the drink is easy for me to consume throughout a typical three-hour session and I have not experienced nausea, stomach problems or other digestive discomfort from it.

For the broader hydration question, see our hot-weather pickleball hydration guide. That article covers why session length, heat and sweat rate matter rather than assuming every player needs the same drink strategy.

Why I chose this instead of juice

I considered bringing orange juice, pineapple juice or another carbohydrate-containing drink. Isoactive was more practical for what I wanted because the powder already combines carbohydrate with electrolytes and stores easily as a dry tub.

It is also inexpensive at the price I paid. A 1320 g tub contains about 40 standard 33 g servings, which works out to roughly €0.49 per standard serving at my €19.79 purchase price.

Because I normally use closer to two scoops rather than 1½, I will get somewhat fewer bottles from my tub, but I still consider the cost low enough that I would have been comfortable paying as much as about €30 for it.

The main practical downside: I do not want this leaking in my bag

My biggest concern has almost nothing to do with the drink itself.

If a bottle of plain water leaks in my pickleball bag, it is annoying. If a sweet Red Fruit sports drink leaks over shoes, clothing and other gear, cleanup is much worse. That makes bottle security more important to me than with water.

The tub and included scoop themselves are straightforward to use. I have no complaints about the container or measuring scoop so far.

Who should buy PowerBar Isoactive for pickleball?

I think it makes the most sense for:

  • players whose normal sessions last around two hours or more;
  • players who sweat heavily;
  • tournament or open-play days with repeated games;
  • players who want carbohydrates and electrolytes in one drink;
  • people who find plain electrolyte tablets less appealing than a flavored drink;
  • players who want a powder that is easy to store and inexpensive per serving.

I would skip it or choose something else if:

  • you only play a short session and are perfectly happy with water;
  • you specifically want electrolytes without calories or carbohydrate;
  • you dislike sweet flavored drinks;
  • you do not want the extra cleanup risk of carrying a sugary drink in your sports bag.

Why I rate PowerBar Isoactive 4.6/5

My overall rating is 4.6/5. This is an editorial score based on my own use, not a laboratory measurement.

This score follows The Pickleball Wise’s published rating method: category-relevant criteria total 100%, each criterion is scored from 1.0 to 5.0 from the documented first-hand evidence, and the weighted result is rounded to one decimal place.

Would I buy it again?

Yes. If the tub ran out now, I would buy PowerBar Isoactive again.

I may choose a different flavor next time simply because I want to see whether I like another one even more. That is not because Red Fruit disappointed me — an 8/10 flavor score is already very good by my standards.

At this point, Isoactive has become a convenient part of how I prepare for longer pickleball sessions: one shaker with the powder, plus plain water alongside it.

Review methodology and sources

This review is based primarily on my own purchase, original photos and about 12 pickleball sessions using PowerBar Isoactive Red Fruit during play. My first-hand claims cover taste, sweetness, mixability, stomach comfort, practical court use, perceived experience, packaging and value.

Ingredient, preparation and nutrition values were cross-checked against PowerBar’s current official Isoactive product information and the label on my own tub. I keep the manufacturer’s nutrient claims separate from what I personally experienced, and I do not claim that my subjective feeling of better energy or mental clarity proves a performance effect.
