How We Test Pickleball Gear
What is a hands-on test?
We call a review hands-on only when the specific paddle, ball, shoe, net or accessory has genuinely been used. We describe how and where it was used, the approximate time involved, which claims come from our own observations and which come from a manufacturer’s specifications. A research-based buying guide is labeled as research, not as a test of products we never touched.
What we document
Depending on the product, we record the exact model and variant, how it was obtained, purchase date and amount paid, approximate personal hours and other club usage if known, playing surface, drills and matches, measurements made, comparisons with equipment actually used, and original photos. Missing details are marked as unknown rather than invented. Prices we paid are historical—not guaranteed current deals.
How the five-star score is calculated
When there is enough firsthand evidence to justify a rating, we choose four to seven criteria relevant to that product category. Criteria may include control, spin, power, comfort, fit, handling, durability, consistency and value. Their weights add up to 100%; each criterion receives a score from 1.0 to 5.0. The total is the sum of each criterion score multiplied by its weight, rounded to one decimal place. Unsupported criteria are left out and the remaining weights redistributed; we do not invent scores for SEO.
Comparisons and the limits of testing
We compare products only if we have actually used them or explicitly state that a comparison comes from verified information rather than an individual test. A short test cannot prove years of durability. We distinguish our own measurements from manufacturer information, differences in test conditions and subjective preferences from facts. A single sample or club rotation is not a controlled laboratory study.
Gifts, loans and affiliate links
If a product is purchased with our money, loaned, gifted or supplied by a brand, the review should say so. Manufacturers can supply technical documents or factual corrections but do not choose the rating or verdict. Some links may generate an affiliate commission at no extra cost to the reader; financial relationships must be disclosed and do not buy positive coverage.
Where rules and technical claims come from
For rules and tournament legality we prioritize the applicable official governing body and its current documents or approved-equipment list. For specifications we may cite the manufacturer’s exact model listing, separating it from physical observations. We do not treat a marketing promise, retailer star average or an unrelated test as proof of personal experience.
When reviews are updated
A review may change when longer use reveals wear, reliability issues, a new limitation or corrected specifications. We preserve the distinction between hours personally played and untracked club use. Earlier reviews published before October 1, 2026 may have used a previous rating format; substantive updates should migrate to the documented weighted method rather than retroactively claiming an older score was calculated with it.
Questions and corrections
For a factual correction or a proposal for genuinely independent testing, include the article URL, exact product and supporting evidence when possible. You can reach us at [email protected]. Learn more in our Editorial Policy and brand partnership policy.
